The Securities and Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) has issued a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to address applicability and interpretation queries of market participants of the SEBI (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations 2012.

Areas where clarification has been given include:

  • the categories in which an applicant can seek registration as an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF);
  • the definition of certain types of fund e.g. Angel fund, Debt fund;
  • the legal form for AIFs;
  • Venture Capital fund registration;
  • investment conditions for an AIF;
  • reporting requirements;
  • overseas investor conditions; and
  • winding up an AIF.
