On 24 November the Union Cabinet of the Indian government approved a proposal which would permit 51% India FDI in multi-brand retail and 100% FDI in single-brand retail. Under the current regime India only allows 51 percent India FDI in single-brand retail trade subject to satisfaction of certain conditions, and India FDI in multi-brand retail trade is prohibited. The proposal however has proven controversial with several political parties in India opposing it.
