The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published a Briefing outlining the need for compliance with the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) requirements prior to the introduction of MIFID II on 3rd January 2018.

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-digit, alpha-numeric code that enables clear and unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions. LEI’s are therefore central to ensuring transparency and surveillance in Market Conduct.

ESMA expects market participants to take all necessary steps to ensure full compliance with the LEI requirements under MiFID II. ESMA has urged entities to ensure that they take all necessary measures as soon as possible, in order to guarantee timely compliance with the LEI Requirements.
