In a doorstep interview, the Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey has indicated support for increasing the cap on Australia foreign investment in Qantas. Under the current provisions of the Qantas Sale Act, foreign ownership of the airline is capped at 49%. In the interview, the Treasurer indicated that he would lean toward lifting foreign ownership restrictions, warning taxpayers would pay the price for keeping Qantas an Australian-backed airline through government support. However, the debate is as yet at an early stage and it is currently unclear what steps the government will take on the matter.
