EUROPE: EFAMA Investment Management Forum Discusses ESMA Issues and Priorities

Steven Maijoor, Chair of ESMA, recently spoke at the EFAMA Investment Management Forum 2012 in Brussels.

The objective of the forum was to provide an overview of ESMA’s work in the area of investment funds, and to expand on recent guidelines on ETFs and other UCITS issues, as well as their interaction with the broader shadow banking debate. A number of on-going work streams in the context of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) were also discussed.

Of particular importance was the discussion of the follow-up work on the discussion paper on key concepts of the AIFMD and types of AIFM that were published at the beginning of the year. In relation to this, it was mentioned that the technical standards required by Article 4(4) of the Directive, will be an important element of the future AIFMD framework and that a consultation paper is close to being finalised, ready for publication in the coming months.
