On 3rd January 2017, Borsa Italiana introduced New Market Rules which comply with the MIFID II obligations. The Market Rules regulate how trading is to be carried out on the Borsa Italia Market.

One particular change that has been incorporated is the definition of Specialists and MIFID II Market Makers:

Under Article 4.4.1 

Specialists are intermediaries admitted to trading which require to Borsa Italiana such qualification and undertake to support the liquidity of the financial instruments for which they act as specialist.

The presence of specialist is mandatory in the following markets and/or the segments:

  1. a) MTA market, STAR segment;
  2. b) MIV market, with the exception of the Professional Segment;
  3. c) ETFplus market, except for the open-end CIUs segment other than
